INTERDISTRICT MATCHES

Mid North Coast District Golf Association completed the second leg of its inter-district clashes with a close fought win over Northern Rivers last Sunday at Woolgoolga.
The event featured junior, junior encourage, senior and veteran players from both Districts and after the Saturday fourball matches the tally stood at three wins a piece.
On Sunday it was the head to head singles matches and Peter Moyle from Ocean Shores put the first point on the board from the visitors but Peter Mackay quickly squared it up when he defeated Phil Dowling from Ballina.
Local knowledge proved decisive as Woolgoolga players Logan Toms, Aaron Hart and Mark Hutchinson and Sawtell’s Chris Neville all completed great victories in the seniors section.
The junior players struggled in their matches however Zac Ion was the shining light in winning his match.
The event was to come down to the Junior encourage players and Jasper Bailey became the hero of the day as he won the last hole and this was in fact the only time during his match he was in front. His victory saw Mid North Coast win back the Causley Shield.

The Fed Causley shield is named after the legendary Northern Rivers official who completed 37 years as District Golf Captain. Fred sadly passed away last years but the players competing had the pleasure of meeting his wife Joan who traveled down from Casino to be present and to present the shield to the winners.

The first golf representative matches for the year were played previously at Camden haven Golf Club. Mid North Coast took a team of 22 players down for the annual clash with Lower North Coast. The team consisted of 6 Junior players, 4 Junior Encourage players, 6 seniors and 6 Masters players. Lower North Coast held the bragging rights and would prove hard beat with the home course advantage. The scores were tied at 5 ½ wins a piece after Saturdays play and it can down to a nail biting finish with Mid North Coast winning by the final tally of 17 matches to 16. District captain Don Penson was ecstatic with the victory and the commitment of the players. Special mention should go to Grant Skinner, Chris Neville and Tim Hyland in the Seniors team for outstanding play in difficult conditions and also to Encourage players Jasper Bailey and Mitch Beaumont who were unbeaten in their matches.
The matches also incorporated the Junior State Pennants competition as part of Sundays play. Again it was very close with the six matches being shared three all. The number one players then had to have a sudden death playoff and Jack Pountney proved the hero parring the hole and sending Mid North Coast into the next round. Jack Hickey, Jack Pountney and David Johnston won their matches while Josh Biggin, Zac Ion and Malcolm Ramsey all lost by very slim margins.
